DAAD IN-COUNTRY/IN-REGION MASTER’S SCHOLARSHIPS — AFRICA

Unlike most DAAD scholarships that fund study in Germany, the In-Country/In-Region Programme funds master’s study at selected high-quality universities within Sub-Saharan Africa itself. This is one of DAAD’s largest scholarship initiatives by volume — designed to strengthen African higher education capacity directly, rather than encouraging brain drain to Europe.

This is an excellent option for students who want fully funded postgraduate study without the cost, visa complexity, or relocation involved in studying abroad. Programmes are hosted at strong regional universities — for example, the University of Ghana, Makerere University (Uganda), University of Nairobi (Kenya), and other partner institutions — often co-funded with regional development banks and government ministries.

What It Covers

• Full tuition fees at the partner university
• Monthly stipend (amount varies by host country and partner institution)
• Study and research materials allowance
• In some programmes, travel costs to and from the host institution within the region
