MEXT JAPAN GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP 2027 — NO IELTS REQUIRED

The MEXT Scholarship (Monbukagakusho Scholarship) is the Japanese Government’s premier international scholarship programme, run by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Since 1954, the programme has funded over 140,000 international students from nearly every country in the world. It is one of the most comprehensive fully funded scholarships available globally, covering tuition, a monthly living allowance, and return airfare with no requirement to repay any funds.

MEXT is particularly well-suited to African students because Japanese language proficiency is not always required. Many master’s and PhD programmes are offered in English, and the embassy conducts its own English assessment. For the Research Student category (graduate-level), students can also enter as research students for up to one year before progressing to a formal degree programme.

Applications must be submitted through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your home country. The next 2027 intake embassy screening cycle will open in April–May 2027 (deadlines vary by country; contact your nearest Japanese Embassy for exact dates).

What It Covers

• Full tuition fees and entrance examination fees paid directly by MEXT.
• Monthly living stipend: ¥143,000 (research/non-degree students), ¥144,000 (master’s students), ¥145,000 (PhD students) with additional regional supplements of ¥2,000–¥3,000 in some areas.
• Round-trip economy-class airfare from your home country to Japan.
• Free university accommodation (residence halls for international students).
• Optional six-month preparatory Japanese language course at a MEXT-designated institute.

Who Can Apply

• Citizens of any country with diplomatic relations with Japan (all African nations qualify).
• Not a Japanese national or dual citizen (unless planning to renounce Japanese citizenship).
• Research Students (Masters/PhD track): must hold a bachelor’s degree (for master’s) or master’s degree (for PhD); minimum GPA of 2.30/3.00 equivalent.
• Undergraduate applicants: must have completed 12 years of schooling.
• Age limits apply (generally under 35 for most graduate categories).
• No IELTS required — many programmes taught in English; embassy conducts its own language assessment.
• Must apply through either the Embassy Recommendation route OR the University Recommendation route (not both).

How to Apply
